Kearsley 5, Swartz Creek 3

Season Comes to an End for the Dragons

In their pre-district game versus the Kearsley Hornets, the Dragons season came to an end after losing a tough game 5-3. The Dragons fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, but battled back to cut the lead to 4-3 in the 4th inning. But, the junior Kearsley pitcher Hendrickson proved to be a worthy opponent shutting down the Creek bats to get the win and advance in the districts.

The Dragons had 6 hits, but couldn't get the timely hits with runners on base necessary to win the game. Meagan Photiou, Michaela Krusina, & Chris Burt each had singles and scored runs. Erin Hescott had a 2 RBI single. Gabby Deering also singled. Hayley Cruthers doubled in the bottom of the 7th with 2 outs, but could not score. She also pitched the complete game allowing 3 earned runs.

It was a tough way to end what may have been the winningest season in Swartz Creek Softball history, certainly in recent years. The ladies finished with a 22-16 overall record and despite several key losses with graduating seniors like 4-year starters Chris Burt & Nicole VanCamp along with Sydney Saidoo, Stephanie Rett, & Sheryl Dollinger, they have a lot to look forward to next year. No....this isn't like the Detroit Lions "We'll Get em' next year..." infamous saying. This is for real.

Coach Rick Clolinger's record has improved every year since taking over the program and there are plenty of bright spots and potential heading into the summer, off-season workouts, and into next spring. For those of us who followed the Dragons this season we know just how close we were to competing for the league championship. We also know how close we were to winning another district championship. And that is what will drive next year's Varsity players to work hard this summer and in the off-season to be the best that they can be. With 7 of the 12 girls potentially returning next year, this will be a team who nobody will be able to take lightly.

Stay tuned. In the coming weeks there will be announcements concerning the high school softball banquet, athletic & academic awards, and other achievements as well as MANY updates to the Dragon Record Books! We will also have articles on the youth (Swartz Creek) and high school (Whaley) summer leagues as well as individual player updates from their travel softball seasons.

GO DRAGONS!!!
