Softball Banquet & Awards Night
The Dragons had their softball banquet and awards night on Tuesday, June 8th. The food was great and the awards were plentiful, which made for a fitting end to the winningest season yet for 5th year coach Rick Clolinger. The team lost their district game to Flint Kearsley by a score of 5-3. The hornets went on to win the district with ease shutting out Flushing 4-0 in the championship game. Oh how close they were.
Some of the highlights of the evening were the emotional speeches given by senior captains Chris Burt, Nicole VanCamp, and Stephanie Rett, all of which shared a common theme: "The team chemistry was awesome and all we wanted to do was work hard and win. Good luck to you all next year. I'm going to miss you all." And it was the leadership of these young ladies who made the team a team to be proud of.
The coach's story about senior Sydney Saidoo was one of hard work, great attitude, & perseverance. The coach explained how Sydney began the 2009 season as a junior on varsity, but was moved down to JV to get more playing time and improve her game. At the beginning of the 2010 season she was getting little playing time. Then, one day she got a chance and made the most of it going 4-4 and instantly became a starter for the remainder of the season. She was not finished however, as she would go on to become the first player during Clolinger's 5 years to receive a 1st Team Flint Metro League All-Conference Award. This experience I assure you is why good coaches coach.
And then there's an untold story, which in my humble opinion made a significant difference in the team's success this season and provides an excellent example of what it means to be a leader and captain of a team. Chris Burt was the starting short stop on varsity her freshman and sophomore years. But, before her junior year began she injured her knee missing the entire season returning at the beginning of districts.
Coming into her senior year she was starting at short stop once again, but early in the season was asked to become the team's full-time catcher. And so she had to make a decision: Play the position she's always really wanted to play.....or.....play the position the team desperately needed her to play. Not only did she decide to do what was best for the team, but she did a fantastic job with a great attitude and enthusiasm making many tremendous defensive plays throughout the season. And that is what being the captain of a team is all about!
