Freshman Receives All-Region Award

Freshman Hayley Cruthers Receives All-Region Award

There were many awards earned in 2010 for several members of the varsity softball team.  And there was recently another as freshman Hayley Cruthers received All-Region honors as one of the top two short stops in the region.

There were 3 other players who received this award in 2009. It is the highest award for any player under 5th year coach Rick Clolinger. Last year's recipients included: Nicole VanCamp, Meghan Bearden, & Kristyn Hinspeter.

Cruthers defensive play was solid all year with her overall numbers including her time on the mound, but the majority came from her play at short stop. She had 36 put outs and 70 assists this year with only 6 errors.

The biggest reason for her recognition this season was undoubtedly her offensive stats, which includes 8 of her 9 Swartz Creek varsity softball records. She is also near the top in several other categories. She led the team in batting average (.447), on base percentage (.513), and slugging percentage (.750).

Cruthers had 30 extra base hits this year including 22 doubles, 6 triples, and 2 home runs. The 22 doubles earned her a tie for 5th place all time in the state of Michigan for doubles in a single season. It also helped the team earn 8th place all time for the number of doubles hit in a single season with 79. She may not be able to break that state record for doubles in the next couple of years though, since about half of those balls hit the fence just missing home runs.

Cruthers has played travel softball for 5 years now and is in her 4th year with one of the elite clubs in Michigan, Finesse Fastpitch. Her travel team is composed of players from all across the state. She was recently named the tournament MVP in the USSSA PC Pride Classic in Canton, MI helping her team win the championship. They also won the USSSA Bay City Summer Classic tournament, while finishing 2nd in the NSA State Championships, which was cancelled in the middle of the semi-final game due to severe weather.

After 4 tournaments (23 games) Cruthers is leading her travel team in batting average (.577), on base percentage (.808), and slugging percentage (1.038) with 11 extra base hits including 6 home runs.
