Home Opener Wins for Varsity

 

Swartz Creek 6  -  Grand Blanc 3

The varsity began their 2012 season with an extra-inning thriller against the visiting Grand Blanc Bobcats.  The game was scoreless after 5 innings with sophomore pitcher Carah Pletscher allowing no hits for the Dragons.  Ashlyn Beck came into pitch in relief in the 6th inning and Grand Blanc scored 3 runs on 3 hits and an error to take the lead 3-0. 

But, the Dragons' would respond in the bottom of the 6th with 3 runs of their own to tie the game with Pletscher singling to lead off the inning.  Michaela Krusina doubled to put runners on the corners.  Gabby Deering was then hit by a pitch to load the bases.  AJ Brookman smashed a double to knock in the first 2 Swartz Creek runs of the season.  A fielder's choice by Ashlyn Beck advanced the runners to 2nd and 3rd.  Emily Rodriquez had a bunt single, which scored Brookman. And the rally ended with the game tied a 3 a piece.

Pletscher returned to the mound and held the Bobcats scoreless allowning no hits in the 7th and 8th innings and led the team with 3 hits.  Brookman also had 2 hits with a couple RBIs.

In the bottom of the 8th inning a couple of fielder choices and an error would put runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs with Junior Hayley Cruthers at the plate.  Cruthers worked the at-bat to a full count before absolutely crushing a 250' Home Run into the wind over the center field fence for a walk-off game winning homer to make the final score 6-3.

In the nightcap the Dragons wasted no time scoring 7 times in the first 3 innings, while only allowing 1 to win a shortened game due to darkness.  Junior AJ Brookman pitched the game only allowing 1 run.  Pletscher, Andrea Aldridge, Deering, Brookman, and Hailey Fox each had a hit in the game. 

Cruthers had 3 walks and was hit by a pitch on the day and scored 3 runs.  Krusina, Deering, and Aldridge each scored twice with Pletscher leading the Dragons with 4 hits on the day. Brookman had 3 hits on the day.

 

Next up.... Creek will host Flushing on Thursday for a pair at 4:00pm.
