Swartz Creek 14 Oxford 6
The Dragons had another come from behind win versus Oxford in the first game on the day at the Owosso Invitational. They scored a run in the bottom of the first with a walk by Hayley Cruthers who advanced to second base on a Gabby Deering ground-out. Michaela Krusina was hit by a pitch. Cruthers stole third base and scoring on a bad throw from the catcher to make the score 1-0 where the inning would end.
Cruthers walked again in the bottom of the third, then advanced to third base on a single by Deering. AJ Brookman doubled scoring both Cruthers and Deering. The inning ended with Creek up 3-0. Oxford came roaring back to take the lead in the top of the 4th with 7 hits and a Dragon error to take the lead 6-3.
The Dragons came back scoring 2 runs to cut the lead to 6-5 in the bottom half of the inning using a lead-off double by Lauren Adas who advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring as Carah Pletscher reached first on an error. Hanna Sayles pinch ran for Pletscher and reached third on a single by Deering. Sayles stole home on a throw to first from the catcher before the inning ended.
Creek tied the game in the bottom of the 5th with a lead-off single by Brookman who reached second on a sacrifice bunt by Hailey Fox. A wild pitch sent Brookman to third. Adas reached base on an error scoring Brookman to tie the game.
The Dragons offense kicked into high gear scoring 8 runs in the bottom of the 6th to break the tie and take a 14-6 lead. Pletscher lead off the inning with a single followed by a single by Cruthers. Deering singled and the Pletscher scored on an error by the center fielder. Micheala Krusina reached base on an error to load the bases. Brookman singled scoring Cruthers and Deering. Beck walked to load the bases. Adas walked scoring Krusina. Aldridge walked scoring Brookman. Pletscher's second at bat in the inning resulted in a base-clearing double, which is where the inning would end.
Pletscher started the game pitching 3 innings with Brookman coming on in relief allowing and only 2 hits to shut down Oxford.
Swartz Creek 6 Freeland 3
The second game was scoreless until the bottom of the 3rd inning when Aldridge started off with a walk, then stole second. Pletscher reached base on error and Sayles came into pinch run stealing second. A double by Deering would score both runners to give the Dragons a 2-0 lead before the inning ended.
Freeland scored a run in the top of the 4th, but Creek came right back in the bottom half of the inning with an Adas single. Aldridge reached base on error advancing Adas to 3rd. Adas would steal home on a delayed steal by Aldridge who made it to second safely after a pickle play. The score was 3-1 at the end of the inning.
Freeland tied the game in the top of the 5th inning 3-3, but once again the Dragons responded with runs of their own. Deering reached base on error and Krusina hit her first home run of the season to give Creek the 5-3 lead.
Creek manufactured an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th on a bunt single by Aldridge. She stole second, then stole third, scoring on a bad throw from the catcher to make the score 6-3, which would prove to be enough to get the win.
Pletscher pitched the first 4 innings allowing a run on 4 hits with Beck coming in relief to pitch 2/3 of an inning. Brookman pitched the final 2 1/3 innings allowing 1 hit, but no runs.
Swartz Creek 10 Owosso 0
The final game between Creek and Owosso would be the championship game with both teams coming into the tourney with 2 wins. The game was never close though as the Dragon bats would catch fire. Combined with a 1 hit and 9 strike out performance by Pletscher on the mound, the 18 hits by Creek resulted in a 5-inning game ended by the run rule.
Cruthers started things out with a single and stolen base in the first before Deering smashed her first home run of the season. 4 singles in a row by Krusina, Brookman, Fox, and Sayles would net another run scored by Krusina before the inning ended giving Creek a 3-0 lead.
In the second Pletscher doubled with Emily Rodriguez coming into run the bases. Deering singled scoring Rodriguez. Krusina singled next sending Deering to third, who would score on a sacrifice fly by Brookman. Fox singled, but Krusina was out at the plate to end the inning with the Dragons up 5-0.
Cruthers singled in the 4th and stole second base again. Deering doubled again scoring Cruthers. A Krusina single scored Deering. Brookman added a single before the inning ended with Creek up 7-0.
Pletscher singled in the 5th with Rodriguez running for her again. Cruthers doubled to score Rodriguez. Deering drew a walk and Krusina singled to load the bases. The final blow was a double by Brookman, which scored Cruthers and Deering and ended the game by the run rule giving the Swartz Creek Dragons the tournament championship.
The Dragons used 33 hits, 16 stolen bases, small-ball, and long-ball to score 30 runs on the day. Next up for the Dragons is an away game at Goodrich next Tuesday.
