With all this time off recently for the prom & rained out games one might have expected the Dragons to be a bit sluggish and start slowly versus league opponent Brandon. But, this is the Year of the Dragon....remember? The ladies wasted no time easily sweeping Brandon tonight improving their league record to 9-2, while getting their 20th and 21st wins for the season. In 2010 Creek had the most league wins (9) and overall wins (22) since the 1970's when our beloved game announcer Chuck's Bee Gee's were making folks dance around the disco balls.
To make tomorrow's make-up game even more interesting word has it that Kearsley split with Clio, which means a Dragon victory could tie them for first place. Hmmmm.
Swartz Creek 10 Brandon 1
In the opener the Dragons scored 5 times in the bottom of the first inning. Hailey Fox doubled followed by a Gabby Deering single pushing Fox to third. Michaela Krusina walked to load the bases with only 1 out. AJ Brookman singled to score Fox and keep the bases loaded. Carah Pletscher reached base on an error that scored Deering and Krusina and put runners at second and third. Emily Rodriguez came into courtesy run for Pletscher. Lauren Adas singled to score Brookman, but Rodriguez was tagged out at the plate. Ashlyn Beck singled to score Adas before the inning ended.
Hayley Cruthers led off the second inning with a double. A bunt single by Fox advanced Cruthers to third. Fox stole second base before a double by Deering scored her and Cruthers. The inning ended with Creek up 8-0.
In the bottom of the 5th Krusina led off hitting her second home run of the season to put the Dragons up 9-0. Pletscher singled with Rodriguez coming into courtesy run for her. Rodriguez stole second before Adas hit another single to put runners on the corners. Abby McGuire's pinch hit sacrifice fly scored Rodriguez ending the game by the run rule 10-0.
Pletscher pitched for the Dragons only allowing 2 hits with 5 strike outs in 5 innings to get the shutout and win.
Swartz Creek 11 Brandon 2
In the nightcap Brandon took an early lead with 3 singles going up 1-0 in the first. Cruthers singled to the opposite field and took second on a miscue by the left-fielder. Fox reached base on an error that also scored Cruthers, while sending Fox to second base. Deering walked, then Fox stole third. A hard line drive by Krusina served as a sacrifice fly scoring Fox. Brookman reached base on a fielder's choice that forced out Deering at second. Pletscher added a single, but the inning ended with Creek up 2-1.
Hanna Sayles singled and Andrea Aldridge followed with a bunt single that with the help of an error by the pitcher put runners at second and third. Sayles scored on a wild pitch before Fox walked. Fox stole second to put runners on the corners again as Deering grounded out to score Aldridge and push Fox to third. Krusina singled to score Fox before the inning ended with the Dragons up 5-1.
Pletscher singled to lead off the third. A 2-out walk to Aldridge put runners at first and second. Cruthers doubled to the opposite field scoring both Aldridge and Pletscher. Fox was then hit by a pitch, but the inning ended with Creek up 7-1.
In the 4th inning Krusina smashed her second homer of the day and 3rd of the year, which would be the only run scored by Creek putting them up 8-1.
A surprise 2-out bunt single by Cruthers followed by her 16th stolen base on the season put Creek into a postion to score. Fox reached base on an error on a hard hit ball that sent Cruthers to third. She then stole second with Deering walking to load the bases. But, they would leave the bases loaded with the score still 8-1.
Two doubles by Brandon in the 6th inning cut the score to 8-2. But, the Dragons came right back in the bottom of the inning to score 3 more runs going up 11-2. Brookman reached on error followed by a Pletscher single to put runners on the corners. Pletscher stole second before Abby McGuire's pinch hit double scored the two of them. A sacrifice bunt by Aldridge scored McGuire. A 2-out single by Cruthers started another rally, but Fox's laser line drive was some how caught by the pitcher and therefore ended the scoring threat.
A Brandon single and error by Creek put two on with no outs. But, three quick outs ended the game giving Creek the win.
Pletscher started the game on the mound for the Dragons pitching 2 innings giving up one earned run on 3 hits with 3 strike outs. Brookman came on in relief pitching 5 innings with 3 hits and an earned run and 4 strike outs.
The Dragons play the make up game tomorrow night against Kearsley starting in the bottom of the 3rd inning with runners on the corners for Creek with 2 outs and a 2-0 lead. The game is scheduled to resume at 4pm.
