Swartz Creek 3 Kearsley 0
The Varsity Dragons came out ready to play tonight in the makeup game versus Kearsley, which picked up in the bottom of the 3rd inning with runners on the corners, 2 outs, and Creek leading 2-0. They looked sharp and energetic. Creek attempted a suicide squeeze on the first pitch, which took a perfect play by the defense to get the speedy Hailey Fox out at first base by half-a-step. Otherwise Hayley Cruthers would have easily scored with Deering moving to second base, but the quick out had no negative effect on the Dragons as they went on to win 3-0.
Before the rain delay....
In the first inning Carah Pletscher led off the game reaching base on an error. Emily Weekly came into courtesy run for Pletscher. A single by Hayley Cruthers put runners on first and second. Weekly and Cruthers both moved up a base on a wild pitch. Gabby Deering singled to score Weekly and Cruthers. Abby McGuire pinch run for Deering, but was stranded after 3 straight outs. Creek was now up 2-0.
Nothing changed until the bottom of the third inning. With one out Cruthers was hit by a pitch. Deering singled to put runners on the corners. A fly out left the runners on the corners with 2 outs and Fox at the plate. But, then the storm came in and the game was postponed.
Picking up where we left off...
The oh-so-close suicide squeeze play ended the scoring threat with Creek still ahead 2-0 after 3 innings.
In the bottom of the 4th Aldridge got things going with a 2-out bunt single. Hanna Sayles followed with a bunt that resulted in the 3rd baseman throwing the ball over the first baseman's head into right field. Aldridge scored on the play and Sayles nearly did, but a perfect throw cut her down at the plate. Creek was now up 3-0.
Pletscher singled to begin the 5th inning. Cruthers hit a hard line drive right at the first baseman who made a nice grab and nearly doubled up Pletscher. Deering reached on a fielder's choice moving Pletscher to second. Fox singled to load the bases, but that's where they would stay as the inning ended with the score still 3-0.
Great pitching by Pletscher tonight absolutely shut down the Kearsley offense (and the previous night) getting the shutout victory with 8 strikeouts, while only allowing 1 hit. The Dragons also played great defense again with Michaela Krusina nabbing a hard line drive in left field, short stop Cruthers catching another hard line drive on her shoe laces, and Fox robbing another Hornet of a hit on a hard ground ball up the middle.
The Dragons control their own destiny with 4 more league games (DH @ Lapeer East Thursday...and a DH Home vs Fenton next Monday). If they win out, the worst they can do is share the league championship.
Other key games will be played this Thursday including Kearsley vs Fenton (7-2). Each of those teams has 2 league losses. On next Monday Kearsley plays Lapeer West (8-4).
Next up for the Dragons they'll host Flint Powers on another makeup date. The non-league double header will begin at 4pm tomorrow (Wednesday 5/16).
