The Dragons hosted and won their invitational tournament today. They beat Brandon, then lost a heartbreaker to Frankenmuth, but came back to easily beat Bay City Western for the second time this season and won via the tiebreaker rule, which came down to runs scored. Frankenmuth & Bay City Western both finished 2-1 like the Dragons, but the Creek O' scored 27 runs for the day to earn the championship. They are 3 for 3 in tournaments this season. The games really just served as practice for the BIG GAMES versus Fenton for the Metro Crown Monday night. Winning was just icing on the cake.
Swartz Creek 11 Brandon 2
In the tourney opener the Dragons faced league opponent Brandon for the third time this year. Brandon got an early lead on a triple and sacrifice fly to go up 1-0.
Hayley Cruthers led off the bottom of the first for the Dragons smashing the ball into the tree beyond the Right Field fence, her 7th homer of the season. Hailey Fox followed with a line drive double to the center field fence, but she would be stranded at second as the inning ended tied 1-1.
In the bottom of the second Ashlyn Beck hit a 2-out single. A wild pitch sent Beck to second. Andrea Aldridge bunted a single to put runners on the corners. Aldridge stole second base on the first pitch to put runners on second and third with 2 outs. Cruthers belted a double to score both runners before the inning ended with Creek up 3-1.
Brandon got one of the runs back next with a double, single, stolen base, and ground out to cut the lead to 3-2.
The score remained unchanged through the third and fourth innings despite walks by Gabby Deering & Cruthers, single by Michaela Krusina, and a bunt single by Aldridge. All would be stranded with the score still 3-2 Creek.
In the fifth inning the Dragons got it going starting with back-to-back bunt singles by Krusina & Abby McGuire to put runners on the corners. Lauren Adas singled to score Krusina, push McGuire to third, and then made it to second on an error. Beck reached base on a fielder's choice that resulted in McGuire getting tagged out at the plate. Aldridge reached base on error, which also scored Adas. Cruthers singled to knock in Beck and push Aldridge to third, then stole second base on the first pitch. Fox belted another double to score Aldridge and Cruthers before the inning ended with Creek up 8-2.
In the sixth Krusina had another bunt single to begin the inning. McGuire reached base on an error that also sent Krusina to third. A single by Adas scored Krusina and the Beck walked to load the bases. Aldridge reached on error that also scored McGuire and Adas. Cruthers was intentionally walked as the inning would end with the Dragons now up 11-2.
3 up and 3 down later in the top of the seventh would end the game with Creek getting their 27th victory on the season.
Carah Pletscher pitched the entire game for the Dragons allowing 2 runs on 3 hits with 4 strike outs.
Swartz Creek 7 Frankenmuth 8
Creek would be the visitors in this game. Cruthers led off with a single, but with 2 outs was caught stealing to end the inning with no score.
Frankenmuth used an error and double to score taking the lead 1-0 after one inning.
The Dragons got it going in the third with McGuire reaching base on error and a bunt single by Aldridge to put runners on the corners. Cruthers ripped another double scoring McGuire, while pushing Aldridge to third. Aldridge scored on a passed ball, then Cruthers scored on a wild pitch. Fox walked. Deering hit a hard line drive to center field, but got out and a quick throw to first base doubled off Fox. The inning ended with Creek up 3-1.
In the bottom of the fifth Frankenmuth got a run on 2 walks, a single, and ground out to cut the lead to 3-2.
Fox singled to start the sixth inning and advanced to second on a passed ball. Deering singled to push Fox to third. Emily Rodriguez came into pinch run for Deering and advanced to second on a passed ball. Pletscher singled to score Fox and move Rodriguez to third. But that is where they would be stranded with Creek up 4-2.
In the top of the seventh Adas hit her first career home run to begin the inning. Aldridge was hit by a pitch. Cruthers grounded out moving Aldridge to second. Fox singled to score Aldridge and advanced to second on the throw to home. Deering singled putting runners on the corners. Deering stole second before Krusina ripped a double to score Fox with Deering moving up to third. But, that is where they would stay with Creek up 7-2.
And then the Frankenmuth proceeded to hit their way to victory with a lead off double followed by 4 consecutive singles, a sacrifice bunt, and with 2 outs and a full-count Frankenmuth smashed a walk-off 3-run homer to win the game 8-7.
Pletscher pitched the game for Creek allowing 8 runs on 10 hits.
Swartz Creek 9 Bay City Western 3
The heartbreaking loss in the previous game may have affected some teams, but not this year's Dragons. They simply dominated Bay City Western for the second time this year.
As visitors again Cruthers led off the game with a single and advanced to second base on a passed ball. A single by Fox put runners at the corners. Fox was caught stealing second and Cruthers could not take advantage on the play to score. Deering singled to score Cruthers before the inning ended with Creek up 1-0.
In the second inning AJ Brookman singled with Hanna Sayles coming into courtesy run. Aldridge's sacrifice bunt moved Sayles to second. Cruthers drilled another double to the opposite field to score Sayles. The inning came to an end with Creek up 2-0.
In the third Deering led off with a double followed by a single by Pletscher to put runners on the corners. Adas sent another ball to the fence to double and score Deering and move Pletscher to third. A 2-out double by Brookman scored both Pletscher and Adas before the inning ended with Creek up 5-0.
Krusina led off the fifth inning with a solo home run, her 4th on the season to put Creek up 6-0, which is where the inning would end. The Dragons shut down Bay City in the bottom of the inning.
Brookman led off the sixth with a single with Sayles coming into courtesy run. Aldridge laid down a bunt that resulted in Sayles getting tagged out at second. With 2 outs Cruthers stepped to the plate a smashed yet another double. Fox singled to score Cruthers, which is where the inning would end 7-0 Creek.
Bay City scored twice on a single, walk, and couple wild pitches to cut the lead to 7-2. Krusina walked in the top of the seventh with Emily Weekly coming into pinch run. Pletscher singled to put runners at first and second. Rodriguez came into pinch run for Pletscher. They both moved up on a wild pitch. A ground out by Adas scored Weekly. A single by Beck put runners at the corners. Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch. Brookman ripped a line drive to short, but it was caught and Beck was doubled up on the play. The Dragons were now up 9-2.
A double and single scored a run for Bay City in the bottom of the seventh, but that is all they'd get with Creek getting the win 9-3.
