Varsity Win 1, Lose 2 at Owosso Tournament

Varsity Win 1st Game, Fall Short In Last Two

In a day better suited for the Winter Olympics, the Dragons travelled to Owosso for a 3-game Round Robin Tournament versus Owosso, Freeland, & Oxford. The bitter relentless 20 mph wind proved to be a thorn in the side of all the pitchers from each of the teams. But, the occasional snow flakes and wind chill did not have the same effect on the hitters as they dominated the games today with hot hitting.

In the first game the Dragons played the host team Owosso. It was an exciting game with many lead changes. Early on Creek was down by 5 runs, but fought back to tie the game in the 3rd inning 6-6. After a couple more lead changes the game was tied 11-11 going into the 7th inning. Meagan Photiou took the mound in relief midway through the 6th inning and shut down the Trojans to keep the game tied and give the Dragons a chance to win with their last at-bats in the bottom of the 7th.

With 1 out the Dragons (Michaela Krusina & Chris Burt) hit the ball hard and took advantage of 2 costly errors by the Trojans to put runners on 2nd & 3rd. An intentional walk was given to Hayley Cruthers to load the bases in the hopes of getting a force out at any base. But with a 2-1 count Gabby Deering, who was 2-3 in the game with a walk and hit-by-pitch, drove the ball into the outfield for the game-winning hit by a final score of 12-11.

Erin Hescott was 3-5, 2 singles, a double, and scored twice. Nicole VanCamp was 2-4. Michaela Krusina was 3-5 with 4 RBIs including a two-run blast (her second HR of the young season), and scored 3 runs. Sheryl Dollinger added 2 sacrifice bunts, 1 hit, and 2 RBIs.

In the second game the Dragons out hit Freeland 8-6, but Freeland took advantage of 14 walks to win the game 13-7. Chris Burt was 2-3 with a walk, 2 RBIs, and scored a run. Hayley Cruthers went 2-2 with 2 walks, scored twice, and had 3 RBIs including her second two-run homer of the season.

The final game was a slug-fest with future league opponent Oxford, who had 16 hits. Creek had 10 hits. The whole game was close with several lead changes, but Oxford held on to win 12-10. Sydney Saidoo was 2-3 with 2 doubles, 3 RBIs, and scored a run. Chris Burt was 2-2 with 2 walks, 3 RBIs and scored a run. Hayley Cruthers was 3-3 with a walk and scored two runs.

The Dragons return to Swartz Creek with a 4-3 record to play their home & league opener versus the Fenton Tigers on Monday, April 19th......where hopefully the temperature will be at least 50 degrees with a little less wind.
