Varsity Gets Come From Behind Win Over Fenton
In the home and league opener for the 2010 Swartz Creek Varsity softball season, the Dragons dropped the first game 7-3. Creek scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th, but fell short in the comeback bid. Meagan Photiou began the rally with a double followed by Michaela Krusina's 3rd home run of the season, then back-to-back doubles by Chris Burt and Hayley Cruthers. Nicole VanCamp was 2-4. Gabby Deering was 1-1 with 3 walks.
In the nightcap, the game was close until the 5th inning when Fenton went up by a score of 5-2. But, the Dragons roared back with a 5 run rally in the bottom of the 5th to take a 7-5 lead. Back-to-back singles by Nicole VanCamp and Michaela Krusina, followed by a 2 RBI single by Hayley Cruthers, another walk to Gabby Deering, and an RBI single by Erin Hescott to tie the game. Then, Sydney Saidoo had what proved to be the game winning hit with a 2 RBI single.
Meagan Photiou's relief pitching in both games was outstanding giving her team a chance to win. The Tigers had 3 singles in the top of the 6th inning, but failed to score thanks to good pitching and solid defense. In the top of the 7th the Tigers would not go down easily. With 2 outs and runners on 2nd & 3rd, a single to center field scored one run, but the second runner and potential tying run was out at the plate on a nice relay from Erin Hescott to Gabby Deering to Chris Burt.
Nicole VanCamp was 2-4, Michaela Krusina was 2-4, Gabby Deering was 1-1 with 2 walks, and Erin Hescott was 2-3. The Dragons are now 5-4 on the season with a 1-1 league record. The win was the first in recent memory versus Fenton and an excellent way for the Dragons to begin league play beating one of the best programs in the area.
The next games for the Dragons will not be until Saturday in a round robin tournament at Bay City Western.
