Varsity Wins 2 of 3 at Bay City Western Tournament
The Dragons improved their overall record to 7-5 on the season Saturday in Auburn (Bay City Western High School) with wins versus Hemlock and North Branch.
In the first game against Hemlock, the Dragons used 18 hits 10 different players to score 11 runs in 6 1/2 innings. But, they got off to a slow start making 5 errors and trailing 5-1 going into the 3rd inning. That's when their bat's got hot cutting the lead to 5-4. They took the lead in the 4th inning 8-6, then added 3 insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to ensure another come from behind victory.
Meagan Photiou was 4-5 and scored 3 runs. Chris Burt went 3-4, scored 3 runs, and had 3 RBIs. Hayley Cruthers was 3-5 with a double, 2 RBIs, scored 2 runs, and pitched a complete game allowing 1 earned run on 6 hits. One of the highlights of the game was when senior catcher Chris Burt made a fantastic diving catch on a foul ball. Cue the ESPN jingle: Da' Da' Dan't...Da' Da' Dan't!
The wheels fell off the bus in the second game versus Petoskey as the Dragons committed 9 errors to Petoskey's 1, losing the game 12-2. Their bat's cooled a bit too with 7 total hits in the game. Nicole VanCamp was 2-3. Erin Hescott was 2-3 and scored a run. Meagan Photiou had both RBIs with her first triple of the season.
The Dragons got their bats going again in the final game versus North Branch with 11 hits to win by a score of 11-8. However, once again they trailed in a close game 3-2 before taking the lead 5-4 in the bottom of the 5th inning. But, it was a 6-run 6th innning that proved to be the difference in the game as the Ladies hung on to win 11-8 in 6 1/2 innings.
Meagan Photiou went 3-4, scored 2 runs, with an RBI, and her 2nd triple of the season. Nicole VanCamp was also 3-4 with a double, 5 RBIs, and scored 2 runs. Michaela Krusina had 2 hits and scored a run. Gabby Deering was 2-3 and scored a run. Hayley Cruthers had 3 walks and scored 3 runs. Chris Burt smashed her first home run of the season with 3 RBIs.
The Dragons are off to one of their better starts in many years. Their explosive offense has kept them in all but one of the 12 games they've played so far averaging 8 runs per game. With more consistent pitching and fewer errors, they just might end up with their first winning season in many years.
