Dragons Pummel Powers

Those popping and cracking sounds you heard Thursday night weren't from the storm that quickly blew through the area or from the various social activities going on around the Chargers' softball field. Nope. It was another unleashing of the Dragons bats on opposing pitchers. This isn't your big sister's Dragons.

Convert those hits into 24 runs with 2 complete games by Dragons starting pitchers and solid defense and you get 2 more wins, which brings their season record to 11-5. That's just 6 wins away from last year's total of 17 for the season. The Dragons have already scored 148 runs this season. To put that into perspective, in 2007 the total runs scored for the entire season was 147. Got your attention yet?

While there is a lot of ball to be played yet in this season one thing is for sure: No lead is safe for opponents. Tonight's games against Powers did not require any comebacks though. The Dragons never trailed in either game.

In the first game, they used 8 hits and 6 walks to score 9 runs to win 9-5. They had a 7-0 lead going into the 5th inning when the Chargers scored 5 times to cut the lead to 7-5. They added a couple insurance runs in the top of the 7th inning, but in the end did not need them. Hayley Cruthers got back on track pitching earning the win with a complete game and 5 strike outs, while allowing 4 hits and 3 walks.

Meagan Photiou had a hit and scored 3 runs. Hayley Cruthers had 2 hits including a double off the top of the right-field fence with a walk, an RBI, stolen base, and scored a run. Nicole VanCamp had a couple hits, an RBI, and scored a run.

In the nightcap, the Dragons didn't allow Powers to get their groove back. Nope. Instead, they mounted a 4-run first inning to let Powers know the first game was not a fluke. They weren't finished though as they scored in every inning except the 6th. The game was never close. Nicole Terry pitched her second complete game in a row scattering 10 hits to get the win including slamming the door by striking out the side in the 7th inning.

Meagan Photiou was 3-3 with a double and scored 4 runs with 3 RBIs. Hayley Cruthers was 3-5 with 2 RBIs, a stolen base, and scored a run. Nicole VanCamp (aka Cheeks VanSlam) was 3-4 and hit her first career home run and had 5 RBIs. Chris Burt had 2 hits and scored 2 runs.

The Dragons travel to Shepherd Saturday for the BlueJay Tournament, which will replace the originally scheduled Creek Quad tourney. They resume league play on Monday at home versus the Holly Bronchos.
