Dragons Finish 1-1 at Shepherd Tournament
The Swartz Creek Varsity Softball Team traveled north to Shepherd High School for a tournament, which replaced the Creek Quad Tourney this weekend finishing with a win and a loss.
In the first game, it was the same ole' Dragons using 14 hits and taking advantage of errors to beat Clare 15-1. The game was essentially over in the first inning, but took 5 innings to get the win by mercy. Hayley Cruthers pitched the complete game allowing 3 hits, 1 walk, and 1 run with 5 strike outs. She also was 2-3 with 3 stolen bases and scored 3 runs.
Nicole VanCamp was 2-4 with 2 RBIs and scored 2 runs. Michaela "Bam-Bam" Krusina absolutely crushed the ball hitting her 5th Home Run of the season. She added a single with 3 RBIs and scored 3 runs. Chris Burt had 2 doubles, 2 RBIs, and scored a run. Erin Hescott had a 2 RBI single and scored 2 runs. Gabby Deering had 2 hits including an RBI double. Adilita Roiter had 2 hits, an RBI, and scored a run. Meagan Photiou also had a hit and scored a run.
They left the tournament on a high note despite losing game 2 to Beal City 9-2, which they needed to win to get to the championship game. If you're not familiar with the Beal City team, well just understand they are currently ranked 3rd in the state in division 4. Their pitcher, Morgan Yuncker, is without a doubt the best pitcher the Dragons have faced this year with 60 mph+ speed, movement, and a wicked slow change-up. She'll be pitching for the Central Michigan University Chippewas next year at this time.
Ok, so why the "finished on a high note" comment for a game they lost? Well, the Dragons were losing 9-0 and came back to score a couple of runs in the 5th inning refusing to go quietly. And they hit the ball hard a couple of times, but unfortunately right at the defenders. In the first 2 innings they stranded 5 runners and 2 more in the 5th. In other words, they had their chances, but just lacked a couple of timely hits.
Meagan Photiou went 2-4 and scored a run. Hayley Cruthers hit an RBI double, scored a run, and just about ended the day for the Beal City pitcher with a rocket line-drive back to the mound that was somehow caught. Chris Burt had an RBI single. Michaela Krusina received 2 of the most intentional non-intentional walks ever (in other words....they pitched around her), which is understandable since the Beal City coaches watched her mammoth home run versus Clare. Sydney Saidoo had the other hit for the Dragons.
The Dragons overall record is now 12-6 (3-1 in the Flint Metro League) heading into Monday's league games versus the Holly Bronchos. C'mon out and watch your home town Dragons in their 2nd home game of the season. Game time is at 4:00pm.
