Varsity 2-1 at Bay City Western Tourney

The Dragons improved their record to 5-2 after a 3 game round robin tournament at Bay City Western High School.  The weather was spectacular all day long, but the Dragons were not equal to the task playing arguably one of their worst overall games since the 2010 season versus the tourney host.  They did bounce back in the last game to get another win finishing 2-1 on the day.

Swartz Creek 16  Bridgeport 0

The girls opened the day against Bridgeport with AJ Brookman on the mound for Creek setting them down 1-2-3.

Hailey Fox singled with 1 out in the bottom of the 1st followed by a monsterous Home Run by Hayley Cruthers, her 3rd on the season, to put the Dragons up 2-0.  Carah Pletscher singled next with Brookman reaching base on one of many errors made by Bridgeport.  Ashley Dusseau singled to score Pletscher with Brookman scoring on a bad throw that also sent Dusseau down to 2nd base.  Lauren Black reached base on an error that scored Dusseau with Black advancing to 2nd on the throw. Emily Rodriguez reached on error with Black moving up to 3rd base.  Rodriguez stole 2nd.  Black scored on a passed ball with Rodriguez moving to 3rd.  Miller walked and then stole 2nd base.  Fox reached base on another error that scored Rodriguez and moved Miller to 3rd. Cruthers doubled to score Miller and move Fox to 3rd.  Pletscher ripped a double knocking in Fox and Cruthers.  Brookman smacked a double scoring Pletscher, but would be stranded at 2nd with the Dragons up 11-0 after 1 inning of play.

3 up and 3 down for Bridgeport in the top of the 2nd inning with a strikeout and couple ground outs.

Lauren Adas singled to lead off the 2nd and then stole 2nd base.  Black singled to score Adas moving to 2nd base on the throw.  Hanna Sayles pinch hit singling to center field moving Black to 3rd.  Fox reached base on an error to load the bases.  Cruthers reached base on a fielder's choice with Black forced out at home and the bases still loaded with 2 outs.  Pletscher hit the ball hard off the pitcher for an infield single scoring Sayles and reloading the bases.  Brookman smashed a double scoring Fox, Cruthers, & Pletscher, before moving to 2nd base on the throw home. Dusseau singled putting runners on the corners.  Adas walked to reload the bases.  But they would be stranded with the Dragons up 16-0 after 2 innings of play.

With 1 out in the 3rd second baseman Hailey Fox made a fantastic diving catch robbing Bridgeport of their first hit of the game.  But, with 2 outs the next batter hit a hard ground ball up the middle getting them their first hit.  The next batter would ground out from Short to 1st to end the game by the run rule.

The Dragons racked up 13 hits in the game.  Pletscher lead the team going 3 for 3 with a double and 3 RBIs and scored 3 times.  Cruthers, Brookman, and Dusseau each had 2 hits.  Cruthers scored 3 runs with a Home Run & 3 RBIs.  Brookman scored once with 2 doubles and 4 RBIs and pitched 3 shutout innings only allowing 1 hit.

Bay City Western 10  Swartz Creek 1

The wheels fell off the bus in game 2 for the Dragons only managing 3 hits in the game, while making 5 costly errors.  Bay City strung out 8 hits and scored 10 runs taking full advantage of the sloppy defense by the Dragons.  A 2 out single in the 1st inning by Cruthers got things started for Creek.  Pletscher ripped a long single in the gap that sent Cruthers home to score with Pletscher advancing to 2nd base on the throw home.  But that is where the scoring would stop for the game for Creek.

Western tied the game in the 2nd inning and the score remained 1-1 through the end of the 3rd.  But, errors and a couple big hits caught up to the Dragons with Western scoring 6 times in the 4th.  Creek never recovered from that bad inning eventually losing 10-1 after 7.

Cruthers, Pletscher, and Black each had singles for the Dragons.  Pletscher pitched for Creek with 6 strikeouts and 4 walks, but couldn't overcome the many timley errors made behind her.

Swartz Creek 8  Petoskey 3

The final game of the day too was not the sharpest game by the Dragons, but the did bounce back and play well enough to get the win.  Cruthers singled with 1 out in the 1st, but would be stranded with the game scoreless after 1.

After holding Petoskey off the scoreboard in the top of the 2nd inning, Dusseau lead off with a single.  Black reached base on an error that pushed Dusseau to 3rd.  Miller laid down a perfect bunt for an infield single to load the bases.  Jamie Perigo reached base on a fielder's choice ground ball as Petoskey went home for the force out, but failed to complete the play as Dusseau scored and the bases reloaded. Cruthers singled to score Black and Miller.  Pletscher smoked a triple down the line to score Cruthers and Perigo before the inning came to a close with the Dragons up 5-0.

The score remained the same until Petoskey hit a Home Run in the top of the 4th to cut the score to 5-1.  Another 2 singles, walk, and fielder's choice would make the score 5-3 heading into the bottom of the 4th.

Fox singled with 1 away and Cruthers reached base on an error to put runners on 1st and 2nd.  Pletscher reached base on a fielder's choice with Fox out at 3rd.  And then Brookman cleared the bases with a long Home Run, her 3rd on the season, to give the Dragons an 8-3 lead.  The remainder of the game went scoreless with Fox making another great defensive play nabbing a hard line drive up the middle preventing a likely double and taking runs off the board for Petoskey.

Fox, Cruthers, & Pletscher had 2 hits and scored 2 times apiece.  Cruthers had 2 RBIs.  Pletscher had a triple and 2 RBIs.  Brookman's Home Run added 3 RBIs to her season total.  Dusseau & Miller each had a hit and scored a run.  Brookman pitched the game with 3 strikeouts, 1 walk, and scattered 8 hits.

Next up for the Dragons is a trip to Lapeer East on Monday for another Flint Metro League Double Header.
