It was a beautiful day at the old softball park in Swartz Creek today as the Dragons played their last games of the season at home. It was also Senior Day with the four seniors Emily Rodriguez, Lauren Adas, AJ Brookman, and Hayley Cruthers taking their last trip around the bases after the tourney ended. The Dragons began the day winning their first 2 ball games before losing the last game to Bay City Western.
Swartz Creek 4 Brandon 0
The Dragons won the toss and would be the home team in the opener versus league opponent Brandon. Senior AJ Brookman pitched the complete game for Creek. Brandon went down in order in the top of the 1st, but so too did the Dragons.
Brandon got a runner to 2nd base on an error, but would strand her in the top of the 2nd. Hailey Fox walked with 1 out. Senior Lauren Adas reached base on a fielder's choice that forced out Fox and 2nd base. With 2 away Ashley Dusseau hit a hard line drive, but right at the center fielder with Creek held scoreless again.
Brandon was held scoreless in the 3rd inning once again.
With 2 outs Senior Hayley Cruthers Doubled advancing to 3rd on an errant throw. But, she would be stranded with the game still scoreless after 3 innings of play.
Brandon was kept off the scoreboard again in the top of the 4th.
Brookman led off the bottom of the 4th with a Double with Tabby Miller coming into courtesy run. Lauren Black singled moving Miller to 3rd. With 1 outs Fox laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored Miller and moved Black to 2nd. Black moved to 3rd on a wild pitch. Adas was walked and then stole 2nd base. Black scored on a wild pitch with Adas moving to 3rd. With 2 outs Jamie Perigo singled scoring Adas. She advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch. Hanna Sayles walked. Cruthers walked to load the bases, but they would all be stranded with the Dragons up 3-0 after 4.
Brandon got a single and a runner to 2nd base, but failed to score in the top of the 5th.
Brookman ripped another Double to lead off the 5th for Creek. Miller came into courtesy run and advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch. Black reached base on an error that scored Miller. Phoebe Cross came into pinch run for Black. But, she would be stranded with Creek up 4-0 after 5.
Brandon was kept off the scoreboard again in the top of the 6th.
Perigo led off the bottom of the 6th with a single. A hard line drive right back to the pitcher resulted in a double-play with Perigo out at 1st. Cruthers singled with 2 outs, but she would be stranded again with the score still 4-0 Creek.
Brandon was retired in order in the top of the 7th giving Creek a 4-0 victory. Brookman pitched 7 shut-out innings allowing just 1 hit with 4 strike outs and no walks.
Cruthers had 2 hits including a Double and a walk. Brookman had 2 Doubles. Black had a hit, RBI, walk, and scored. Perigo had 2 hits and an RBI. Adas had a walk and scored. Miller scored twice while courtesy running for Brookman. Fox had a walk, sacrifice bunt, and RBI.
Swartz Creek 6 North Branch 4
Carah Pletscher took the mound in the 2nd game for the Dragons. Creek would be the visiting team and went down in order in the 1st inning. North Branch got a runner on base with a bunt, but failed to score as well.
Fox Doubled with 1 out in the top of the 2nd. Dusseau singled scoring Fox, but she would be stranded as the Dragons took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the 2nd.
North Branch threatened to score with a couple runners on, but Pletscher struck out 2 batters to end the inning and preserve the lead.
Miller led off the 3rd with a bunt single. Cruthers singled moving Miller to 2nd. Black reached base on an error that loaded the bases with 2 outs. But, they would all be stranded with the score still 1-0.
North Branch would have the bases loaded with 1 out, but a line-drive Double Play to 2nd baseman Fox who threw quickly to 1st baseman Brookman ended the inning.
Adas led off the top of the 4th with a Double. Dusseau singled to put runners on the corners. Perigo reached base on a fielder's choice that scored Adas and moved Dusseau to 2nd who was safe on an error. Dusseau and Perigo moved to 2nd and 3rd on a wild pitch. With 1 out Cruthers singled to score Perigo and Dusseau. Cruthers advanced to 2nd on a passed ball, but would be stranded again. But, the Dragons now had a 4-0 lead.
With 1 out Brandon hit a Home Run to make the score 4-1, but that would be all they'd get in the 4th.
Black led off with a single in the 5th. Phoebe Cross came into pinch run. A ground out by Adas moved Cross to 2nd. Dusseau walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd. With 2 outs Perigo hit a hard line drive to the pitcher to end the inning.
A walk, error, and single would give North Branch another run making it 4-2 after 5 innings of play.
Miller got another lead off bunt single in the top of the 6th. Cruthers ripped her 2nd Triple of the year to right field scoring Miller. A ground out by Pletscher scored Cruthers. Black singled with 2 outs. Fox walked. Sayles came into pinch run for Black. But, they would be stranded with Creek up 6-2.
North Branch was held scoreless in the bottom of the 6th.
Perigo singled with 1 out in the top of the 7th inning for the Dragons, but she would be stranded.
North Branch put 2 more runs on the board in the bottom of the 7th on a couple hits, walk, and sacrifice bunt. But, the Dragons held on to get the win 6-4.
Pletscher allowed 4 earned runs on 6 hits and 7 walks with 7 strikeouts.
Cruthers had 3 hits including a Triple, 3 RBIs, and scored. Black had 2 hits. Dusseau had 2 hits, RBI, walk, and scored. Miller had 2 hits and scored. Fox had a Double, walk, and scored. Adas had a Double and scored. Perigo had a hit, RBI, and scored.
Bay City Western 11 Swartz Creek 5
Cross would start the game on the mound for the Dragons. Creek would be the home team.
Western hit the ball hard in the 1st inning managing to get 2 runners on, but would not score. Creek hit the ball hard as well in the bottom of the 1st with Brookman getting a single, but would not score.
Western got 2 more runners on in the 2nd, but would not score again.
Adas smashed her 3rd Home Run of the year to the opposite field to get Creek on the board first. With 1 out Perigo walked, Sayles was hit by a pitch, and Rodriguez walked to load the bases. Cruthers singled scoring Perigo and reloaded the bases. With 2 outs Brookman walked to reload the bases and score Sayles. Black hit a hard line drive right at the 2nd baseman to end the inning with the Dragons up 3-0.
An error, ground out, and single gave Western their first run making the score 3-1 in the top of the 3rd.
Perigo was hit by a pitch (6th time this year) with 2 outs in the bottom of the 3rd. She moved to 2nd on a wild pitch. Sayles singled moving Perigo to 3rd, but they would be stranded.
A lead-off Home Run for Western in the top of the 4th cut the lead to 3-2. The game was tied after a couple hits, wild pitches, and walk. Brookman came into relieve Cross with Black taking over 1st base. A single and ground out later put Western up 5-3.
Cruthers led off the bottom of the 4th with a single. A ground out by Brookman moved Cruthers to 2nd. With 2 outs Black Doubled scoring Cruthers. She would be stranded, but the Dragons cut the score to 5-4 after 4.
Western would explode scoring 4 runs in the top of the 5th with 3 hits and a couple Dragon errors. Now Creek was down 8-4.
Perigo drew a 1 out walk to start the bottom of the 5th. Rodriguez singled moving Perigo down to 2nd. Cruthers singled scoring Perigo and moving Sayles to 2nd. But, they would be stranded with the score 8-5 after 5.
Western was kept off the board in the top of the 6th, but so were the Dragons in the bottom of the inning.
A couple singles and a Double would put the Dragons down 11-5 heading into the bottom of the 7th. They would go down in order losing to Western for 2nd time this year.
Cross pitched 3 innings allowing 4 earned runs on 6 hits, 2 walks, and 1 strikeout. Brookman pitched 4 innings allowing 4 earned runs on 8 hits with 2 strikeouts.
Cruthers had 3 hits, 2 RBIs, and scored. Brookman, Black, and Adas had a hit and RBI apiece. Adas scored with a Home Run. Black had a Double. Sayles had a hit, was hit by a pitch, and scored. Perigo walked and scored twice. Rodriguez had a hit and walk.
The Dragons will have to figure out how to beat this team should they make it to Regionals again this year. But, first things first. Beat Holly Monday and Win the Metro League Championship. Then, go to Flushing an win the Districts. Then, worry about Bay City Western.
