Varsity Sweeps Linden in League Opener

The Dragons traveled to Linden Thursday night to open play in the Flint Metro League.  The weather was great and the girls came out ready to play in the first game. The tone was set in the first inning of the first game as they scored 10 runs and kept the momentum through both games.  They improved their overall record to 3-0 and 2-0 in the League.

Hanna Sayles led off the game with a single and promptly stole second and third.  Hailey Fox walked and stole second.  Tabby Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Lauren Black hit into a fielder's choice that scored Sayles with Linden attempting to get the out at home.  Carah Pletscher reached base on an error by the pitcher scoring Fox and Miller. Jamie Perigo was hit by a pitch to reload the bases.  Lauren Pletscher grounded out to short to score Black. With 2 outs Danielle Heron singled up the middle to score Carah Pletscher and Perigo then advaced to second on the throw home.  Sayles batted for the second time in the inning singling and scoring Heron.  Fox reached base on an error putting two on with two outs.  And then Miller launched a bomb over the center field fence, her first career home run, a 3-run shot making the score 10-0.  Black followed with a single, but would be stranded as the inning ended.


Carah Pletscher made her first start on the mound striking out three in the bottom of the first to maintain the lead.  Lauren Pletscher was hit by a pitch in the second with Kara Manier coming into courtesy run. She reached second base on a wild pitch, but would be stranded.


Linden was held scoreless again in the bottom of the second inning keeping the score 10-0.


Fox got an infield hit in the top of the third, moved to second on a ground out and then scored on a 2-out single by Black. Carah Pletscher singled, but her and Black would be stranded with the Dragons up 11-0 after 2 1/2.


Linden managed to get on the scoreboard without a hit in the bottom of the third on a walk, error and couple wild pitches cutting the score to 11-1, which is where it would end by mercy rule in the 5th.


Pletscher pitched the first 3 innings with 7 strikeouts and 1 unearned run with no hits.  Phoebe Cross pitched the last 2 innings with 2 strikeouts and no hits. The two combined for a no-hitter.


Sayles had 2 hits, scored twice, 2 stolen bases and an RBI.  Heron had 2 hits, 2 RBIs and scored.  Black had 2 hits with 2 RBIs and scored.  Fox had a hit and scored 3 runs.  Miller had a Home Run, 3 RBIs and scored.  Perigo had a hit and scored.

The Dragons would be the home team in the nightcap with Cross on the mound retiring the Eagles in order.  But they too would go down in order in the bottom of the first.


Again in the top of the second the Eagles went down in order.  In the bottom of the second Black led off with a single.  With 2 outs Lauren Pletscher was hit by a pitch.  Manier came into courtesy run.  Heron reached base on an error that scored Black. The inning ended with the Dragons up 1-0 after two.


Linden managed a single in the 3rd, but the first of 3 ESPN defensive plays by Swartz Creek helped keep them off the scoreboard.  Carah Pletscher made a diving catching on a line drive up the middle from her second base position.


Sayles led off the bottom of the 3rd with a triple scoring on an RBI bunt single by Fox.  Black smacked another single scoring Fox.  Perigo had an infield hit.  Lauren Pletscher doubled to score Fox and Black.  The inning ended with the Dragons up 5-0.


Linden threatened to score in the top of the 4th with 4 singles, but with two outs Miller made the second ESPN play of the game on a single up the middle to her in center field.  She came up throwing a dart to the catcher Lauren Pletscher cutting down a runner at the plate.


Madisen Henry led off the bottom of the 4th with a single.  A ground out advanced her to second.  Fox reached base on an error that sent Henry to third.  Miller bunted to load the bases.  Black grounded out to second to score Henry and move the runners up.  The inning ended with Creek up 6-0. 


Linden tried to get back in the game in the 5th with a walk and sacrifice bunt, but failed to score.


The Dragons got things going in the bottom of the 5th with a 1-out bunt single by Perigo who reached second on an error.  A sacrifice bunt by Lauren Pletscher moved her to 3rd with 2 away.  Heron ripped the ball up the middle scoring Perigo before the inning ended with Creek up 7-0.


In the top of the 6th Perigo would make the 3rd ESPN play of the game diving for a ball in foul territory in left field retiring the lead off batter.  Linden threatened to score with a single an error, but would not score.


Sayles led off the bottom of the 6th with a double, then advanced to third on a passed ball.  Miller reached base on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners.  On a double steal Sayles scored with Miller getting to second.  Miller stole third before Black RBI single to score her.  Gabby Oberlin came into pinch run for Black. Carah Pletscher had another single, but the inning would end with the Dragons up 9-0.


The Eagles would go down in order to end the game with Creek getting the victory 9-0.  Cross pitched the complete game scattering 6 hits and a strikeout to get the shutout.


Sayles had a triple and double and scored twice.  Black had 3 hits, 3 RBIs and scored twice.  Perigo had 2 hits and scored twice.  Heron had a hit an RBI.  Fox had a hit, scored and an RBI.  Miller had a hit and scored. Lauren Pletscher had a hit and 2 RBIs.  Henry had a hit and scored.  Carah Pletscher had a hit. 


The Dragons will travel to Clarkston for a round robin tourney this Saturday.
