Varsity Splits with Kearsley

The Dragons travelled to Kearsley for a Flint Metro League double header.  It turned out to be probably the best game-day weather they've had this season.  The first game was a battle to the very end with Creek coming out on top, but the second game went the other way.  The Dragons are 5-3 in league play and 9-8 overall.

Hailey Fox ripped a 1-out triple and scored on a ground-out by Tabby Miller.  Lauren Black singled with 2 outs, but was stranded with the Dragons up 1-0. Kearsley came right back in the bottom half to take the lead 2-1 on 3 hits, sacrifice bunt and fielder's choice.

 

Creek was held scoreless in the 2nd despite threatening with a 1-out double by Jamie Perigo.  Kearsley extended their lead in the bottom of the 2nd after the first two batters were retired.  They used an infield hit followed by back-to-back singles and a batter who was hit by a pitch to get another run making it 3-1 heading into the 3rd.

 

The Dragons rallied big in the top of the 3rd with a lead off triple by Hanna Sayles who scored on Fox's second triple of the game.  Miller battled to put the ball in play grounding out to score Fox again.  With one away Black hit a long double.  An infield hit by Carah Pletscher moved Black to 3rd.  Pletscher stole 2nd.  Black scored on a wild pitch with Pletscher moving to 3rd, but she would be left on base with Creek back on top 4-3 after 3 1/2.

 

Kearsley led off with a single.  A 1-out error put runners on 2nd and 3rd.  The next batter struck out swinging.  With 2 outs Carah Pletscher made a diving catch up the middle to end the scoring threat for Kearsley.

 

Both Creek and Kearsley went down in order in the 4th keeping the score 4-3.

 

Fox led off the 5th with a hard ground ball to shortstop, who failed to make the play.  She stole 2nd followed by back to back walks to Miller and Black to load the bases.  Carah Pletscher singled to score Fox and keep the bases loaded with no outs.  3 strikeouts in a row ended the threat leaving the bases loaded, while extending their lead to 5-3.

 

Kearsley pressured the Dragons again in the bottom of the 5th.  A lead off walk, infield hit and single loaded the bases with no outs.  A strikeout, pop out to 3rd and diving catch on a line drive to Black ended the inning.

 

Creek went down 1-2-3 in the top of the 6th.  Kearsley got another lead off single, but the next 3 batters were retired.

 

With 1 out Black singled in the top of the 7th, but she too would be stranded.  Kearsley was retired in order in the bottom of the 7th giving the Dragons the 5-3 victory.

 

Phoebe Cross pitched the complete game for Creek scattering 10 hits with 1 walk, a hit batter, 3 strikeouts and no wild pitches.  The Dragons played great defense behind her.

 

The Dragons had 9 hits.  Fox had 2 triples, scored 3 runs and had 1 RBI.  Black had 3 hits including a double, walk and scored.  Carah Pletscher had 2 hits.  Miller had 2 RBIs.  Perigo had a double.  The Dragons got key hits in the game, but Kearsley pitching amassed 14 strikeouts.

Kearsley would be the away team in the nightcap.  The first batter reached base on a wild pitch dropped 3rd strike.  An error on a bunt put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs.  A single and sacrifice bunt later gave Kearsley a 2-0 lead.

 

Creek went down in order in the bottom of the 1st as did Kearsley in the top of the 2nd.

 

Carah Pletscher led off the bottom half with a single, then advanced to 2nd on a passed ball.  Perigo's second double on the day scored Pletscher, but the inning ended with Kearsley up 2-1.

 

With one away Kearsley got another runner on base with another dropped 3rd strikeout.  A shallow line drive grab by the right fielder Sayles and quick throw to 1st base resulted in an inning ending double play.

 

Ashley Dusseau led off the bottom of the 3rd with a single.  A 1-out single by Fox put runners on 1st and 2nd.  Black singled to score Dusseau and moved Fox to 3rd.  Carah Pletscher singled to score Fox.  With 2 on and 2 out the inning ended on a hard ground out by Perigo and close play at 1st, but the Dragons took the lead 3-2.

 

In the top of the 4th Kearsley got 2 runners on in scoring position with a single, walk and wild pitch.  A double emptied the bases before the inning ended with Kearsley back on top 4-3.

 

Creek tried to rally with back to back walks to Gabby Oberlin and Dusseau with one down.  They would be stranded though keeping the score 4-3 after 4.

 

A lead off single by Kearsley in the top of the 5th followed by a passed ball and 2 wild pitches increased their lead 5-3.  With a walk and single they threatened to score again, but the center fielder Miller gunned down a runner at 3rd to end the inning.

 

In the bottom of the 5th with 1 out Black walked and Carah Pletscher singled, but they would be left on base as well with the Dragons unable to get key hits again.

 

The lead off batter for Kearsley reached base on an error in the top of the 6th.  A passed ball and 2 wild pitches later she scored to extend their lead to 6-3. 

 

With 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th Sayles hit a hard line-out to the pitcher as the Dragons were running out of time.  Kearsley added another run in the top of the 7th with a double and single making the score 7-3.

 

Fox reached base on an error on a hard ground ball to the shortstop to lead off the bottom of the 7th, but they could not get anything going as the game came to a close.

 

Carah Pletscher pitched the complete game for the Dragons allowing just 7 hits with 13 strikeouts, but could not over come numerous passed balls and wild pitches. 

 

Creek only managed 6 hits with another 9 strikeouts.  Black had 2 hits with an RBI, walk and scored.  Carah Pletscher had 2 hits and an RBI.  Fox had a hit and scored.  Perigo had a double and RBI.  Dusseau had a hit and scored.
