Dragons 1-2 in Saturday's Tourney at Swartz Creek

The Dragons played their second tourney of the 2015 season on Saturday at home in Swartz Creek.  They came out strong in the first game, but lapsed in game two.  The third game was better, but their late inning rally came up short and they ended up 1-2 on the day.

 

Swartz Creek 7  Alpena 1

The first batter for Alpena doubled, while the next 2 struck out.  With the clean-up batter at the plate the runner was caught stealing 3rd on a throw from catcher Kylee Pierce to third baseman Ashley Dusseau for the 3rd out.  Ella Sinclair led off the bottom of the 1st with a single.  Pierce put the Dragons on the scoreboard crushing a 2-run homer over the scoreboard, the first of her varsity career.  Danielle Heron reached base on an error followed by a walk to Lauren Black.  2 outs later Ashley Dusseau singled to bring home Heron. The inning ended with the Dragons up 3-0.

 

Alpena was retired in order in the top of the 2nd on 3 strikeouts by pitcher Madisen Henry.  In the bottom of the 2nd the Dragons managed a base runner on a walk to Pierce.  Hailey Dupuis came into courtesy run and stole 2nd, but she would be stranded.  An Alpena batter reached base on an error, but she would be left on base in the top of the 3rd.  Natalie Oldrham walked with 2 outs in the bottom of the 3rd for Creek, but she too would be stranded.  

 

Alpena got on the scoreboard with a solo home run in the top of the 4th cutting the lead to 3-1.  Kara Manier helped regain the 3 run lead by hitting her first career varsity home run in the bottom of the inning.  Sinclair singled with 2 outs and stole 2nd. She advanced to 3rd on a passed ball, but would be stranded with the score 4-1 after 4 innings of play.

 

Alpena was retired in order in the top of the 5th.  Black ripped a line drive solo home run with 1 out in the bottom of the 5th.  With 2 outs Oldrham and Ashley Dusseau had back to back singles putting runners on 1st and 3rd.  Lauren Pletscher doubled to score both runners before the inning ended with the Dragons increasing their lead to 7-1.

 

Alpena managed a couple of singles in the top of the 6th, but the Dragons kept them off the scoreboard.  Creek batters were retired in order in the bottom of the 6th.  The lead off hitter for Alpena reached base on an error in the top of the 7th, but with 1 out she was doubled up on line-drive double play from short stop Sinclair to first baseman Black to end the game.

 

The Dragons had 9 hits in the game.  Kylee Pierce had a home run, 2 RBIs, walk and scored. Kara Manier had a home run, RBI, walked and scored.  Lauren Black had a home run, RBI, walked and scored.  Ella Sinclair had 2 hits, stolen base and scored.  Ashley Dusseau had 2 hits, RBI and scored.  Lauren Pletscher had a double and 2 RBIs. Natalie Oldrham had a hit, walk and scored.  Madisen Henry pitched the complete game for the Dragons allowing just 1 run on 4 hits with 5 strike outs and no walks.

 

Lakeland 13  Swartz Creek 3

Sinclair led off the bottom of the inning with a single.  Pierce also singled with Dupuis coming into courtesy run.  The runners advanced to 2nd and 3rd on a passed ball.  Black singled scoring both runners before the inning came to an end with the Dragons up 2-0.  With the help of 4 errors by the Dragons Lakeland used 8 hits to score 10 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning in the 2nd game of the day. 

 

The Dragons were retired in order in the top of the 2nd.  A lead off homer put another run on the board for Lakeland.  The next batter singled and moved to 2nd on a passed ball, then 3rd on a wild pitch.  She scored on a sacrifice fly before they were done with the score 12-2.  The Dragons were retired in order again in the top of the 3rd.  A lead off single and stolen base put a runner on 2nd for Lakeland.  She scored on a single making the score 13-2 before the last out of the 3rd inning.   

 

Black led off the top of the 4th with a single.  A sacrifice bunt by Stephanie Bloss moved her to 2nd.  Oldrham doubled to score Black before the inning ended with the Dragons down 13-3.  Lakeland had a base runner after another Creek error in the bottom of the 4th, but she would not score.  Pierce doubled in the top of the 5th with Dupuis coming into courtesy run, but she would be stranded as the game ended by the run rule.

 

The Dragons had 6 hits in the game.  Lauren Black had 2 hits, 2 RBIs and scored.  Kylee Pierce had 2 hits including a double.  Ella Sinclair had a hit and scored.  Natalie Oldrham had a double and RBI.  Hailey Dupuis scored a run.  5 errors and numerous mental mistakes by the Dragons did not help pitcher Phoebe Cross.

 

Bay City Central 4  Swartz Creek 3

Bay City Central was retired in order in the top of the 1st of the final game of the day.  Sinclair led off the bottom of the 1st with a single.  Back to back fielder choices and a strike out kept Creek off the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning.  Central was retired in order in the top of the 2nd.  Oldrham walked with 1 out in the bottom of the 2nd, but she was caught stealing.  Manier walked, but she would be stranded.

Central took a 3-0 lead in the top of the 3rd on 3 hits and 2 more Creek errors.  Sinclair walked with 1 out in the bottom of the 3rd, but was caught stealing and the Dragons were kept off the board again.  Central was set down in order in the top of the 4th.  Danielle Heron singled in the bottom of the inning, but a fielder choice and 2 strike outs ended the inning with the Dragons still down 3-0.

 

Central got a 2-out hit in the top of the 5th, but failed to score.  Ashley Dusseau got a 1-out walk in the bottom of the 5th.  Sinclair singled putting runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs.  Pierce singled to score Dusseau, but a line-drive out by Heron ended the inning for the Dragons with the score 3-1 after 5.

 

A walk and triple added a run for Central in the top of the 6th.  McKenzie McDaniel walked in the bottom of the inning, but she would be stranded with the score 4-1 after 6.  Central managed 2 singles in the top of the 7th, but did not score.  Ashley Dusseau led off the bottom of the 7th with a single.  Pletscher reached base on a fielder choice with Dusseau out at 2nd.  She advanced to 2nd on a ground out by Sinclair.  With 2 outs Pierce reached base on an error and Pletscher scored.  Heron singled to score Pierce. Black singled.  A passed ball put runners on 2nd and 3rd, but that is where they would stay as the Dragons came up one hit short of winning the game.

 

The Dragons had 7 hits with 5 walks.  Ella Sinclair had 2 hits and a walk.  Danielle Heron had 2 hits and an RBI.  Kylee Pierce had a hit, RBI and scored.  Ashley Dusseau had a hit, walk and scored.  Lauren Black had a hit.  Natalie Oldrham, McKenzie McDaniel and Kara Manier also drew walks.  Madisen Henry pitched for the Dragons scattering 7 hits with 13 strikeouts and 1 walk in a game where Creek errors proved costly again.
