Dragons Win District Title!

The first game of the district tourney was never very close.  The Dragons got great pitching from Phoebe Cross who scattered 4 hits in 5 shutout innings with 5 strikeouts.  For the Dragons Lauren Pletscher led the team with 3 hits including a double, 5 RBIs and scored twice.  Kylee Pierce had 2 hits, an RBI and scored.  Ella Sinclair had a hit, RBI and scored.  Natalie Oldrham had a hit and scored twice.  Danielle Heron had a hit and scored twice.

The championship game was a nail-biter where the Dragons faced Kearsley for the 4th time this season after Kearsley beat Flushing moments before.  Creek would be the home team.  Madisen Henry pitched for the Dragons.  In the top of the 1st Kearsley went down in order.  Ella Sinclair reached on error in the bottom of the 1st, but she would be stranded.  


Kearsley managed a couple runners in the 2nd on a walk and single, but could not score.  The Dragons were set down in order in the bottom of the inning.  Kearsley got a single in the 3rd, but could not score.  Kara Manier led off the 3rd with a single and advanced to 2nd on a sac bunt by Allison Dusseau, but she would be stranded as well.


Kearsley got on the scoreboard first with 2 walks, a sac bunt and ground out taking a 1-0 lead.   The Dragons got a walk from Oldrham and single by Pletscher, but failed to score in the bottom of the 4th.  A couple hits and error gave Kearsley a great chance to score in the 5th with the bases loaded, but could not add to their lead.  Manier led off the inning reaching base on an error that sent her to 2nd.  She reached 3rd on a passed ball.  Hailey Dupuis came into pinch run and scored on a wild pitch.  Sinclair walked, then was thrown out attempting to steal as the inning ended with the game tied.


A single, error and ground out gave Kearsley the lead before the inning ended.  Creek got a lead off single by Pierce in the bottom of the 6th.  Oldrham singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs.  Danielle Heron singled to load the bases.  Pletscher hit a ground ball to 3rd, which forced out Pierce at the plate and kept the bases loaded.  Ashley Dusseau ripped a long ball to deep center field, but the Kearsley outfielder made a spectacular running catch, which sent all the runners back to keep the bases loaded with 2 outs.  A wild pitch scored Oldrham and moved the runners up before the inning ended with the game tied 2-2.


Kearsley went down in order in the top of the 7th.  The Dragons got a 2-out single from Lauren Black, but could not score.  Kearsley got a lead off single, walke and used an error to threaten to score.  But, the Dragons kept them off the scoreboard.  Creek got a single from Heron in the 8th, but she too would be stranded.  


Kearsley got a 2-out double in the 9th inning, but Henry got a big strikeout to end that threat.  In the bottom of the 9th with a full-count senior McKenzie McDaniel blasted her 1st career home run deep over the left field fence to win the game and district championship for the Dragons.  


For the Dragons Madisen Henry pitched 9 inning allowing 2 runs on 7 hits 6 strikeouts.  McKenzie McDaniel hit the game winning walk-off home run.  Danielle Heron had 2 hits.  Kara Manier, Kylee Pierce, Natalie Oldrham, Lauren Pletscher and Lauren Black had one hit each.  Oldrham and pinch-runner Hailey Dupuis each scored.


The Dragons will travel next Saturday for Regionals at Saginaw Valley State University.
