Dragons 2-1 at Final Home Tourney

The Dragons were oh so close to winning their first tourney of the season on Senior Day at Swartz Creek.  They certainly are continuing to improve each week and are expecting to surprise some opponents in the post season.

Dragons Pregame in the Dugout

Swartz Creek 2  North Branch 0

Madisen Henry pitched another great game adding another shutout and win to her season in the opener against North Branch.  She scattered 6 hits and 1 walk through the game along with 12 strikeouts.  The defense played well with only 2 errors in the game.

The Dragons offense only managed 6 hits and 1 walk in the game, but it would be enough for the win.  The first run was scored in the 4th with a lead off double by Jess Verran.  She was moved to third base on a sac fly by Kylee Pierce, then scored on a ground out by Allison Dusseau.  Pierce singled in the 6th inning, moved to 2nd after Sydney Scott was hit by a pitch.  A passed ball and wild pitch scored Pierce to give the Dragons a 2-0 lead heading into the top of the 7th, which proved to be enough for the win.

For the Dragons Kylee Pierce had 2 hits and scored.  Jess Verran had a double and scored.  Allison Dusseau had an RBI.  Sydney Scott had a double and was hit by a pitch.  Madison Majestic and Olivia Hughes each had a hit.

Swartz Creek 10   New Lothrop 6

Jess Verran got her second win on the season in limited attempts, pitching a very solid game versus the Hornets.  In the top of the 1st New Lothrop managed a walk, but did not score.  The Dragons were retired in order.  The Hornets got their first hit in the 2nd, but were kept from scoring again.  Creek got a lead off walk from Allison Dusseau in the 2nd.  She stole second base and a ground out moved her to third base.  Natalie Oldrham walked.  A wild pitch scored Dusseau and move Oldrham to second base, before the inning ended with the Dragons up 1-0.

The Hornets tied the game in the 3rd with 3 hits.  They would have scored more but on a double to right field, Olivia Hughes hit her cut off Dusseau, who made a perfect throw to third base to get the runner out.  And then the Dragons came right back to regain the lead in the bottom of the 3rd.  Hughes singled to start the inning.  Ella Sinclair walked.  Jess Verran reached first base on a sac bunt attempt and error, which loaded the bases with no outs.  Abigail Buckner came into courtesy run.  An infield fly by Pierce was the first out.  Dusseau hit into a fielder's choice, which resulted in Hughes being out at the plate, but kept the bases loaded with 2 outs.  Back to back errors by the Hornets on hard hit balls from Scott and Oldrham scored Sinclair, Buckner and Dusseau before the inning ended with Creek up 4-1.

The Hornets managed a hit in the 4th inning, but failed to score.  The Dragons loaded the bases with Hughes being hit by a pitch, singles by Sinclair and Verran, but could not score.  The Hornets had another hit in the 5th, but could not score again.  The Dragons extended their lead in the 5th however beginning with a 1-out single from Scott.  Oldrham beat out a sac bunt for a single.  Madison Majestic singled to score Scott and Oldrham.  The DP Madisen Henry walked, with the Flex Madison Snider running for her.  Sinclair singled to score Majestic before the inning came to a close.  The Dragons now had a 7-1 lead.

The Hornets managed a couple base runners in the 6th on a hit and fielder's choice, but Verran struck out the side to end the threat.  The Dragons padded their lead in the bottom of the inning starting with a lead off single from Pierce.  Dusseau followed with a single.  A sac bunt from Scott moved both runners into scoring position.  Oldrham singled to score Pierce and move Dusseau to third base. Oldrham stole second base and Majestic knocked in both runners with another single, before the inning ended with Creek up 10-1.

The Hornets refused to go down easily getting 4 hits in the top of the 7th and with the help of 3 Dragon errors were able to score 5 times, but it would not be enough.

Verran had 9 strikeouts in the game for Creek with only 1 walk, while allowing 12 hits.  Majestic had 2 hits, 4 RBIs and scored.  Sinclair had 2 hits, an RBI, walk and scored. Oldrham had 2 hits, an RBI and scored twice.  Dusseau had a hit, walk and scored 3 runs.  Verran had a hit, sac and courtesy runner Buckner scored.  Pierce had a hit and scored.  Hughes had a hit.

Swartz Creek Softball Senior Day

Bay City Western 3  Swartz Creek 2

The Dragons would be the visiting team in the Championship game.  Henry pitched another fabulous game versus another top ranked team in the state.  Although the team came up short, it was a great effort by all.

Pierce reached base on an error in the top of the 1st with 2 outs, but could not score.  Henry struck out the side in the bottom of the inning.  Both teams went down in order in the 2nd inning.

Sam Lyons was hit by a pitch with 1 out in the 3rd.  Sinlcair tripled to score Lyons, then scored on an errant throw to give Creek a 2-0 lead.  Western was retired in order again.

The Dragons would be retired in order in each of the remaining innings.  Western scored on back to back doubles in the 4th to cut the lead to 2-1.  They tied the game in the 5th with a couple bunt singles, an error and stolen base.  In the bottom of the 7th with the game tied, Western got a 2 out double, followed by a soft single to win the game.

Henry scattered 7 hits and 1 walk with 10 strikeouts to keep the game close.  But the Dragons offense just couldn't get going, managing only 2 hits, Sinclair's triple and a double from Pierce.  Lyons and Sinclair scored the runs for Creek.

Next up for the Dragons...Monday afternoon at Flushing they'll play their final 2 Metro League games.  They are 6-6 in the league and 13-19 overall.  They were 5-18 a few weeks ago, winning 8 of their last 9 games.
